Fynbos

(A simple way to pronounce Fynbos correctly:

Fyn rhymes with "mane" and Bos rhymes with "hoss"

The word Fynbos (Fine Bush) comes from South Africa, and it's derived from the Dutch "fijn Bosch". Fynbos describes a very distinctive plant family that is found in the southern/south western Cape province in South Africa. This unique vegetation is wonderful in its floral diversity, and it's characterized by tall protea shrubs, heath-like shrubs, reed like plants and bulbous herbs. We chose the name "Fynbos" to represent our miniature horses and small dogs, because these animals are also unique, small, hardy, beautiful and very special!

All the plants and flowers featured on this website are Fynbos! For more information, please visit this interesting site on FYNBOS.

Our Miniature Horses

Here at Fynbos Miniatures we like to keep things quite easy going and fun. Our acreage is not big, so that necessitates some careful planning. The horses have small holding pens with decent run in shelters, which leaves most of our remaining land available for regular grazing. We thoroughly enjoy seeing our horses simply eating well, whether it's their good quality hay, beet pulp and oats or out in the field enjoying grass. All our horses get handled every day and receive sensible and consistent attention. In return we want good behaviour from them, as well as co-operation when we're doing their regular hoof trimmings. Over the years our miniature horses have also really impressed us with their amazing hardiness, which is definitely something to admire. Overall we feel they're a very happy, friendly, uncomplicated and healthy group of horses!

(As any horse owners know all too well, there always seem to be more jobs that still need to be done. Our horse setup is no different, it continues to be a work in progress as well - so please bear with us. Our most recent "projects" were to lay gravel and rubber mats down in and around the shelters, to combat some of the mud issues that arise during the wet winter months. Eventually we hope to slowly start redoing all our temporary pens, finally getting rid of some of the rather unsightly - and yet really useful - orange twine. Never a bored moment!)

Our Small Dogs

Our Chihuahuas and Miniature Dachshunds are first and foremost family pets, so they live indoors with us. They also get to spend regular time outdoors going for walks or enjoying the sunshine and fresh air while in their outdoor kennel. Our dogs are all valued family members, and we are committed to caring for them for the rest of their lives.

ABOUT OUR PHOTOS :

Fynbos Miniatures' Website is about our animals (small horses and dogs), with particular emphasis on making lots of good quality large photos available to anyone who wants to take a closer looks at any specific horse or dog. We've always loved photographing our animals, so that probably will help to explain just why this website features so many photos. To ensure that the pages still load in a reasonable length of time, most of the photos have been reduced to "thumbnails" (small framed pictures). So for the casual visitor just passing through quickly, these small pictures should probably suffice. For everyone else please feel free to click on any framed image if you'd like to see the larger, good quality version of that picture. Then just use the "back" button to return to the web page you were viewing.

All the pictures of Fynbos flowers are thumbnails as well. For anyone who has the time and interest, viewing the larger images will be a joy. We of course think that these flowers are absolutely beautiful!

All the photos of animals on this website were taken by us, and are unaltered (other than the usual file size reductions, as well as where we occasionally cropped out some background detail or faces - purely for privacy reasons and because this website is specifically meant to be "All About The Animals!"). These fun photos of our horses and dogs were all taken either at our previous home in Alberta, here on our new acreage in British Columbia, or in our kind neighbour's field where our mares love to graze. So what you see is a true representation of our animals, in all their casually candid (and usually unwashed and unclipped) natural states!
